What Happens When Newborn Babies Lose Weight?
When newborn babies lose too much weight, it has commonly been decided that breast milk does not contain enough nutrients and mothers must supplement breastfeeding with formula. However, new research shows that some of a newborn’s initial weight loss may be caused by the IV fluids given to the mother during the birth, not her breast milk.
The weight loss may be caused in part by an infant regulating its hydration after the labor, when it was exposed to increased fluids before birth, the researchers found. In looking at the relationships between the IV fluids a mother received during labor and the baby’s neonatal output and weight loss.
